The idea of a quote like, "water is the softest substance in nature, yet it can erode mountains and rocks, over time a small stream can cut a mountain in two." in Kung Fu or Taiji practise, always makes me smile. Just the image of a big burly aggressor attacking, and the defence is a smooth manoeuvring to his blind side, followed up with a gentle massage... eventually after hours of this combat, the bad guy moves off worn down and very relaxed.
In fact the analogy of water wearing down mountains is provocative, but it's not practical. more though that it's better to visualise the soft ever present water, peaceful and tranquil, until it is raised up, it's then got power, the power of the ocean wave washing away ships and land in one hit, then it is at peace again... this is the potential.
So my latest take on this is, "Your body is rooted in the earth, your head is suspended by the moon, your mind or Yi is the moon's gravity, the ocean is your chi. When both body and mind move together, your chi becomes like a great wave, sweeping all away."
Nice thought I guess.
